What does the OpenVPN client do?
OpenVPN uses configuration files to describe a server connection, its transport and authentication requirements. VPN Proto imports those profiles on Android; your VPN provider or administrator supplies the server and account.
What you need
- An Android phone running Android 7.0 or later.
- An .ovpn file from a server you trust, with required certificates and keys embedded in the file.
- Your server username and password, if the profile uses auth-user-pass.
How to set up OpenVPN in VPN Proto
- Open Profiles → Add profile → Import file.
- Optionally give the profile a name such as Work. Enable the username and password option if your provider requires it.
- Choose your .ovpn file. VPN Proto detects OpenVPN from its contents.
- Return to Connect, confirm the selected profile, and tap Connect. Accept Android’s VPN permission request.
- Wait for the connection check to finish. Tap Disconnect before changing profiles.
Use the right configuration. A saved profile is not a server account. Use details supplied for your own connection and keep credentials and private keys private.
If the connection does not work
The file imports, but the connection fails
Importing a profile saves its settings; it does not prove that the server is reachable. Check the remote address and port, whether the server expects TCP or UDP, and whether the account is still active.
A certificate or authentication error appears
Ask your provider for an updated profile. Profiles referencing certificate files stored somewhere else may need a self-contained export with embedded certificates. Never share your private key while asking for help.
I have a WireGuard file instead
A .conf file containing [Interface] and [Peer] belongs to WireGuard. Relabeling an OpenVPN profile does not convert it. Use the matching protocol guide.
Good to know before connecting
VPN Proto keeps multiple profiles, but Android normally runs one VPN connection at a time. Your server configuration controls routing, DNS and the cryptographic settings. The app’s Connected state follows a reachability check; it is not a promise about anonymity, speed or the absence of leaks.
To change a saved profile, open Profiles and use its menu. Disconnect an active connection before editing or switching. The app offers guidance, but server availability and configuration remain the responsibility of the server operator.
